Neglecting polydispersity degrades propensity measurements in supercooled liquids

چکیده

We conduct molecular dynamics simulations of a bidisperse Kob-Andersen (KA) glass former, modified to add in additional polydispersity. The original KA system is known exhibit dynamical heterogeneity. Prior work defined propensity, the mean motion particle averaged over reconstructing initial positions all particles but with randomized velocities. existence propensity shows that structure and are connected. In this paper, we study systems which mimic problems would be encountered measuring colloidal where polydisperse (they have slight size variations). polydispersity by altering into quartet consisting both slightly larger smaller than parent system. then introduce errors reconstruction mistakes one might make experiment. degrade measurement, some cases nearly completely; no longer has an isoconfigurational ensemble any useful sense. Our results show sample suitable for measurements provided avoids mistakes.

Supercooled Liquids and Glasses

Glasses are materials that are much more common in our daily life than one might naively expect. Apart from the obvious (inorganic) glasses, such as wine glasses, bottles and windows, we also have the organic (often polymeric) glasses, such as most plastic materials (bags, coatings, etc.). In the last few years also metallic glasses have come to our daily (St. Andrews) life since they are used,...

namics of supercooled liquids ?

Europhysics Letters PREPRINT Are there localized saddles behind the heterogeneous dynamics of supercooled liquids? Abstract. – We numerically study the interplay between heterogeneous dynamics and properties of negatively curved regions of the potential energy surface in a model glassy system. We find that the unstable modes of saddles and quasi-saddles undergo a localization transition close t...

Supercooled Liquids and Polyamorphism

We have discovered a solid, apparently amorphous phase of triphenyl phosphite to which the supercooled liquid converts, a phase distinct from both the glass and the crystal. To date, this is the clearest and best identified case of a first-order transition from a liquid to another apparently amorphous condensed phase. We discuss this phenomenon in terms of a recently formulated theory of superc...

Mechanics of Supercooled Liquids

Pure substances can often be cooled below their melting points and still remain in the liquid state. For some supercooled liquids, a further cooling slows down viscous flow greatly, but does not slow down self-diffusion as much. We formulate a continuum theory that regards viscous flow and self-diffusion as concurrent, but distinct, processes. We generalize Newton’s law of viscosity to relate s...

From Supercooled Liquids to RFOT

In the introductory chapter we focused on the supercooled and deeply supercooled branches in Fig. 1.1, as a way to properly introduce the phenomenon of the glassy slowdown, the fundamental notion ofmetastable glassy state, and lay the groundwork for the discussion of the Random First Order Theory of the glassy slowdown which this thesis is based upon. This discussion takes place in the present ...
